FIRST HUNTS: ADDY
Age 10
And there we were, stuck in the middle of nowhere in the dark, trying to find our campsite. Then finally after a long time, we found it. I woke up the next morning thinking we would get an antelope somewhere in the afternoon, but that did not work out. The morning passed and we did not get anything, the afternoon still nothing. It was the evening when the two older brothers and my dad decided to go gopher hunting instead. The littles and I stayed in the camper. Suddenly my dad saw some antelope on BLM land! [BLM land is land you can shoot an antelope on]. My dad took out the gun and gave it to Harlan, my oldest brother, even after he failed two other times to shoot in the day. He crouched down and shot. BANG! went the gun; missed! The antelope was still there! He had one more shot! BANG! He got it!
That night I thought, “Thank God”.
Time passed on the second day. It was about ten thirty and we saw some other antelope, but they were too high up in the mountains. My mom decided to switch guns with my dad, but by then she scared the antelope away. My dad went way far away from where none of us could see him. Finally, he called on the phone that he got one!
I got to butcher this antelope, and it was gross but fun.
Right after that stop, my mom saw some antelope barely on BLM land. She took the shot! She got it first shot! But I had to stay in the car with the littles.
That night I thought, “Praise the Lord!”
The next morning, we were getting ready to leave. Everyone had shot an antelope except Jep [the second oldest]. I woke up to the sound of my dad going to plug in the generator but before he did, he saw some antelope and told my mom, and lucky we were camping on BLM land! She told Jep to shoot it, and he just woke up two minutes ago, so he climbed out of the camper and stepped on a cactus and BANG! He got it first shot! After we butchered it, we left.
Hunting was very fun and I’m looking forward to our next hunting trip.
