First Hunts: Canyon

Written by Canyon, Age 11: Kentucky

Hunting has been a part of my family for years and I couldn't wait to start going too. There were a couple of bucks that I saw on our game camera that I really liked.
The night before me and my dad went hunting I could not sleep at all because I was so excited, so we decided to hunt that next afternoon. When we got in the blind the wind was thankfully blowing toward us so we took a nap to pass the time by.

Unfortunately, when we woke up the wind was blowing straight to the corn. A doe came to the corn and started blowing and took off running, but we didn’t give up. This happened another time and it was getting later, so we decided to walk back towards home.

On the way home, we had to walk by my tree stand and I felt like God was telling me to sit in the stand and be patient. So my dad and I did just that and waited patiently. Suddenly, my dad saw a doe walk out from the tree line with a small buck behind her. Then, the big buck stepped out into the big open field. It was him, the one I wanted! I was using my granddaddy’s .243 rifle and I put the crosshairs on him and squeezed the trigger. BOOM! I watched him drop. We got down from the stand and walked up to the big deer. I was so excited when I saw him laying there, so like I always do, I called my mom to tell her the news. She was so happy for me! We brought him home to the house and showed everyone in my family. They were all so excited and happy for me too. My greatest challenge was passing up smaller, younger bucks to be able to kill an older, more mature buck.

I learn alot hunting, but on this hunt I learned how to trust in God more because He put it on my heart to get in my tree stand and be patient.
I hunt to feed my family the food that God provides us.
I will hunt ‘til the day I die, Lord-willing!
